Australia Still can't bat when the ball is swinging
July 22nd 2010 01:13
Australia last night was bowled out on the first day of the second test for only 88 runs. The scorecard represented more of a park cricket side than the best players in our nation.
It was a another dismal performance when faced with the swinging ball. With the highest score being 17 which was scored by 2nd test wicket keeper Tim Payne. Ever since the 2005 Ashes series Australia were found out when the ball started to swing. Their techniques were all found wanting and nothing has changed.
Micheal Clarke was clean bowled by a ball that didn't do too much but thanks the the gaping hole he left between bat and pad the ball was able to get through and collect the stumps. Steve Smith while still very young in terms of age and experience at the top level played an appalling shot straight after lunch which further entrenched the bad situation that the Australians found them selves in. Hussey was unlucky to be given LBW and Johnson got a ball that would have found out many of his higher order team mates. Apart from that however everyone else just seem to forget how to bat.
Pakistan then probably had the better of conditions as the overcast skies which help their swing bowlers started to clear and the sun came out as they started their run chase. However they we still able to make better use of their tools and conditions and batted very senisibly to be 3/148 overnight.
Another failure from Marcus North will put any hopes of playing the Ashes to bed. Bring in Usman I say. He is the future of Australian cricket with out a doubt. This kid will play a thousand Tests for Australia and it only makes sense to get him in there as soon as possible to get the experience he needs to become the full package later on in his career.
