Cricketing Brain - August 2008

Indian Cricket selectors have dumped Yusuf Pathan and Piyush Chawla from the one day squad. Not very long ago,Younus had played a sterling role towards the victory of Rajasthan Royals.Piyush too had bowled superbly during IPL.They failed miserably in Pakistan; then the condition there was not suited for them.If they are talented and are promising then they should have been retained in the team.
Mahendra Singh "Dhoni" is back after utilising his "rest period" in shooting and fulfilling other commercial obligations.Dhoni took the unprecedented decision to skip the Lanka series citing tiredness. He is barely three years into International Cricket and he is exhausted.Think about Sachin,Rahul and Saurabh who have been there for more than a decade and never complained tiredness.Obviously commercial interest must have been a major factor towards Dhoni's decision.

BCCI recommended Dhoni for Khel Ratna award. He deserves that but was it fair to recommend him before Rahul and Saurabh? These two gentlemen are being deliberately humiliated for not being in cordial terms with the BCCI.Gavasker and Kapil Dev too were subjected to similar humiliation at the fag end of their career. No one can, however, snatch away more than 10 thousand runs that Rahul has scored and he has been part of almost all epic victory that India has managed to clinch in this decade.Rahul Dravid will remain one of the greatest without any award bestowed to him curtsy BCCI.
