Cricketing Brain - November 2006

Shoaib Akhtar - End of the Saga?

November 26th 2006 16:12
Shoaib Akhtar.... The world didnt know him before he bowled Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar with two unplayable yorkers at Eden Gardens in Calcutta in 1999. Thats when everyone stood up and took notice of this tearaway speedster..

But being the cricket fanatic that I am..I knew him from much before when he made his debut against West Indies in 1997. I had been impressed by his bowling action instantly.. I didnt understand much about bowling then to appreciate his bowling. Then in 1998... Pakistan toured South Africa and this fellow grabbed 5/43 to win Pakistan the test match. South Africa was the number 1 side then and for Pakstan to go there and win a test match...it was a great acheivement.

Then the rest of the year 1998 was pretty average for him...he had failed to cement his place in the side and poor bowling against Australia at home later that year meant he was not initially picked for India in 1999.

Regardless of his inconsisten showing so far...he had become one of my favourite bowlers....Then came the Asian Test Championship 1999 at Calcutta... Two deliveries that Shoaib Akhtar and his fans will probably never forget. India were cruising in reply to Paksitan's paltry 185. Shoaib bowled an inswinging yorker to Dravid...his off stump knocked out of the ground. In walked the hero Sachin in to the middle...welcomed by an uproar.. first time Shoaib bowling to the little master...an inswinging yorker....gone...middle stump uprooted..Sachin on his way....that was it...that made Shoaib Akhtar...that made him famous...that gave him his place in the side. Pakistan went onto win that test match and the Test Championship.

Pakistan won all the ODI tournaments in the lead up to the 99 World Cup and Shoaib bowled magnificiently..his fan base was growing...

Then came the World Cup
Pakistan played magnificient cricket and Shoaib bowled brilliantly...ending up with 16 wickets..

Then Pakistan toured Australia...this was Shoaib's big series...a big test series in Australia... this is where the success had slowly started to get to his head..He had a disappointing test series....his action was questioned..got banned..then the ban got revoked and he was back playing again.. Bowled well in the tri series.. Then broke down with injury and missed most of the 2000 and 2001. In 2002..played a pivotal role in Pakistan's 2-1 ODI series win against Australia in Australia.. Then came his best performance ever which can be watched here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya249HodrPU against Australia in the second innings at Colombo.. Australia crusing at 74/1 then totterring at 74/4 at the end of the same over...Ponting, Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh all gone in the same over within the space of 4 ball. Only Shoaib could be so explosive..
T

Today Shoaib is a very popular player. Although he probably has missed more test matches than he has played...but he is an integral member of the side and has won numerous tests for Pakistan...the most recent ones being against England last year.

Despite his talent and his matchwinning ability..he is heavily criticized for his attitude, lack of commitment, lack of teamwork skills, indiscipline, drinking habits, parrtying till late night etc.

All these are probably true.. He probably is indisciplined..he probably DOES drink and party at nights when the team is touring...he probably DOES play for himself...

but he is my favourite bowler... the most explossive bowler in the world...a bowler that has demolished many a batting line up in the world...a bowler that many top order batsmen fear..

The ban I think is too harsh... I think PCB whose relationships with ICC has recently been strained due to the Hair-Inzamam fiasco is trying to show to the world how unbiased and honest it is..

First of all..there have been occasions when players in other sports have been let of for the same offence...the presence of nandrolone. Shoaib Akhtar is an injury prone bowler...he is the fastest bowler who needs various medicines and treatments to keep him fit...in such a case..it is quite possible for nandrolone to be in his blood sample. .Same is the case for Asif. He was also coming back after a serious injury...

Shane Warne was found guilty and was banned for 1 year. Asif has been banned for 1 year...Shoaib is guilty of the SAME offence but is banned for 2 years. Unfair in my books..not to mention too harsh...This ban would probably end his career as it is extremely difficult for a fast bowler like him to make a comeback at 33.

Both Asif and Shoaib are my favourite bowlers and although Asif will inshallah be back...I will sorely miss Shoaib Akhtar and his bowling...the enthusiaism he exudes, the excitement his brings, the thrill he brings.

Separation of Religion and Cricket

November 26th 2006 14:54
As Muslims... we are often criticized for our inability to separate religion from politics and be secular. The loyalty of Muslims towards the country they live in is doubted in most countries where they are a minority..As much as I despise the idea of a secular muslim and would LOVE to write about how idiotic it is...but this is a cricket blog and I will stay on topic..

This time...Muslims have been criticized for something new...this time they have been asked to separate cricket from religion... and guess where it came from...PAKISTAN

Wait a second...did I hear that right?? Pakistan did you say?? What?? Pakistan?? Was that the nation that was created to serve as a homeland for Muslims?? Wasnt that the entire idea behind the partition??? Isnt Pakistan called Islamic Republic??

Umm...things are a bit different now... The man in charge of Pakistan now is Mr Pervez Musharaf...the lion..the Rambo...the man who saved Paksitan from the brink of destruction...the man who has introduced englightened moderation in Pakistan..the man who is a military dictator yet manages to get away with it..

Naseem Ashraf..the new PCB chairman has recently instructed captain Inzamam ul Haq to separate religion from cricket...

Before I go any further...what needs to be explained is why such a directive was given in the first place...

Recently....what has been a common practice is the use of the words "Inshallah, Bismillah, Alhamdulillah" by Pakistani cricketers during presentations, interviews etc.. This made one English reporter to remark that Allah should win the Man of the Series Award during the England-Pakistan series late last year. Pakistani players are openly seen praying together during net sessions or on the fields. The straw that broke the camel's back was Mohammad Yousuf's conversion to Islam last year...Mohammad Yousuf was a Christian before..

At a time when Pervez Musharaf is desperately trying to please America and has started using terms like "enlightened moderation" a religious cricket team, that constantly mentions words like Allah, Inshallah, Bismillah and is seen openly praying together on the fields, does not gel too well with Mr Musharaf's plans..

So what does he do?? He rings up the mini Musharaf Mr Naseem Ashraf..who has been handpicked by the man himself to be the chairman of PCB. and asks him to take necessary steps...Hence such a directive was given to the players...

There is absolutely no doubt about the postiive Islam has had on the Pakistan cricket team... The Pakistan cricket team hihas been known more for its off field activities - match fixing, brawls between players etc. Over the last 2 years or so...there is a change in the Pakistan cricket team... No longer are these stories heard....there is a bond of brotherhood visible between the players. There is unity, there is confidence and there is faith...the best example of this would be Mohammad Yousuf's growth as a player. He wa always a good batsman...today he is a very very good batsman...there is absolutely no doubt about the importance offaith in his transformation.

But politicians dont understand that.. Little to these people realize that if there is anything that needs to be separated from Pakistani cricket...its Musharaf and his henchmen...

Mohammad Ashraful was initially dropped from the Bangladesh squad for the ODIs against Zimbabwe....reasons given by the selectors were poor form... Fair enough... Although for a team like Bangladesh...I would still not drop the best batsman of the side for poor form...but the reason given by Faruque Ahmed, the chief selector is fair enough because Ashraful did perform very poorly with the bat recently...

But what happens next is even more amusing...

Ashraful goes on to score a century and then a magnificient 265 in the domestic match against Chittagong.... within a few days...he is recalled again and now he is back in the side...

My point is....he shouldnt have been dropped in the first place...but once he was dropped..he should have been dropped for atleast an ODI to let him know that although he is the best batsman in the country....he should NOT take his place for granted...but picking him up immediately...it will only give the impression that he is indispensible to the squad.

India skittled out for 91 in less than 30 overs chasing 249 for victory. I had seen a bit of the Durban pitch last year when Shoaib Akhtar and Zaheer Khan bowled superbly for Asia XI against Africa XI. The Durban pitch has everything a fast bowler looks for.. a pitch that is so rare to find these days...

Everyone has been talking about the extra bounce India will have to face...the pace...the lack of experience of the Indian batsmen etc etc.. And that was clearly evident when the Indian batsmen clearly had no clue how to face Andre Nel

Bangladesh and ICC Champions Trophy

November 23rd 2006 03:10
]In order to make this ICC Champions Trophy which is fast losing favour among the experts and pundits, ICC decided to make this year's tournament more competetive. A way of doing that was by having the weaker ODI teams compete with each other to qualify so that only the top teams played each other for the most part of the tournament!
Bangladesh happens to be the second weakest cricket side in the world... so the entire world more or less knew that it was going to be Sri Lanka and West Indies qualifying.
Thats exactly what happened!! That was expected! Great! Thats not what bothers me
